Educational Purpose and Rotation Description:
The UCSD Pulmonary Rehabilitation rotation will provide the pulmonary/critical care fellow the opportunity to learn the principles of lung rehabilitation in a premier program. Adult male and female patients from a variety of ethnic and cultural backgrounds are referred to UCSD for multidisciplinary treatment that incorporates education, physical and respiratory therapy, exercise training, and psychological support. The fellow is encouraged to participate in all classes and activities. In addition, research opportunities are available.
Rotation Objectives:
- Acquire knowledge of:
- Physiologic impairment associated with chronic lung disease
- Effect of chronic lung disease on quality of life
- Principles and techniques associated with pulmonary rehabilitation
- Outcomes associated with pulmonary rehabilitation
- Treatments available for patients with advanced lung disease
- Establish competence in pulmonary techniques and procedures:
- Patient education
- Prescribing oxygen and pulmonary medications
- Gain experience in:
- Working with patients with chronic pulmonary disease
- Working with a multidisciplinary team of healthcare professionals
- Exercise prescription for chronic lung disease
- Outpatient management of COPD

Evaluation:
The trainee will receive a written evaluation at the end of their rotation based on cognitive, patient management, procedural and humanistic skills. This evaluation, including areas for improvement, will be discussed personally with the trainee at the end of the rotation and then forwarded to the Program Director in the trainee’s permanent file.
